New style showroom boosts sales

Dolphin Mobility in Manchester opened the doors to its refurbished Salford showroom 12 months ago and is celebrating a year of increased footfall and a larger customer base. The company is anticipating a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in turnover thanks in part to the new showroom.

The refurbishment was made possible by a regeneration grant from Salford City Council as part of the redevelopment of an area in Eccles, Dolphin Mobility then matched the council’s investment which enabled the company to substantially enhance the premises, with the most significant change being to the shop front which was bought forward in line with the pavement on the busy road.

As part of the ongoing redevelopment, the shops in the area are being refreshed through a building front improvement scheme. According to Salford City Council, since the scheme commenced in 2008, over 80 building frontages have already benefited from a ‘face lift’, with 95 local jobs being safeguarded, 14 units having been brought back into use and shop owners, including Dolphin Mobility, reporting increased trade.

Clair Wilkinson, Business Development Manager, commented: "The difference the refurbishment has made is incredible. Where previously people would often walk past the building as we were set back from the main road and would often get missed, new customers and clients are visiting us and actually asking how long we have been open! They are incredibly surprised when I tell them we have been open since 2001.”

According to Manager Dave Barratt, they are now able to invite more potential customer and professionals alike into the showroom for demonstrations and open days: "The showroom is much more bright and airy. The refurbishment has given us the space to be able to display our products better and carry out demonstrations when needed, enabling people to see the complete portfolio we have on offer.”

Dolphin Mobility’s Chris Nicholas added: "The refurbishment has enabled us to offer healthcare professionals, such as Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, the facility for CPD (continued professional development) by way of training sessions on our stairlifts, hoists and specialised equipment.”

Another high point of 2013 has seen the company being awarded a place on Salford City Council’s framework partnering project, making it the only non-manufacturer on the scheme. The framework helps the council to send out strictly approved contractors on various jobs around the area based on cost, quality of their work, the products they stock and their ability to complete time sensitive projects. No takers for Stair Lift

A GRIEVING son who has given away practically everything in his mother’s house cannot persuade anyone to take the most expensive item.

Richard Mechen, 61, of Bennachie Avenue, Inverurie, has contacted numerous charities since the death of his 91-year-old mother, Helen, in February, to ask if they wanted a stair lift worth thousands of pounds.

He has not heard back from any of them.

He said: “We have given away practically everything in her house. Her church, The Church of Scotland, took the lion’s share. She was forever giving little bits and pieces to her church but she didn’t really attend due to ill health in the end.

“The biggest and most expensive item in her house is the one that is giving us the most problems.

“I’ve contacted charities by e-mail but have not even had a response. I’m amazed.

“It was my father who needed it initially but he died a considerable time ago. It was serviced a couple of years ago and is still in good working order. Surely someone would be glad of it. They’re not cheap,” he added.

Help the Aged - Stairlifts

Many people have been talking about Help the Aged Stairlifts, this is the response from the owner of Dolphin Mobility.

We are very concerned about this ourselves. The Help the Aged campaign 
is in theory managed by Keep Able, who in turn sub-contract all 
stairlifts to Companion Stairlifts, the Direct Sales Division of 
Minivator Stairlifts. If you phone Help the Aged Stairlifts, you will 
actually speak to someone at Minivator, who tend to be very cagey when 
questionned about the structure of this deal and who they are..
With their massive internet advertising spend on this campaign, and 
their 'We will beat any price guarantee', Minivator are in fact directly 
competing with and undermining their own dealers. Word has it that the 
prices they offer start off quite high, and only fall to dealer price 
levels if the customer confronts them with a competitive quotation. 
Bringing into question how much Help the Aged actually care about the 
people they supposedly want to help.

It would be interesting to see how the Charity Commission would view 
their trading status, or if they are not trading, whether Keep 
Able/Companion/Minivator are actually passing themselves off as Help the 
Aged. Whatever way, the customer needs to know they are not buying form 
Help the Aged, and may be advised to get second or third quotes from 
local companies.

Over the last few years prices of new stairlifts have fallen considerably. It is now possible to buy a new stairlift for around the same price that a second hand lift would have been 10 or 15 years ago. Consequently many perfectly serviceable stairlifts are being scrapped.

Dolphin Mobility currently have in excess of 100 straight stairlifts in stock, ready to install. Most of the lifts we have are Stannah, Meditek and Bison Bede, many are only a few months old.

For a limited time we will supply and install a second hand straight stairlift in the South-East of England for £900, including a 2 year parts and labour warranty in office hours (With most new stairlifts you only get 12 months). The only extra you may have to pay would be for a power point, if you don't have one that we can use.

Reconditioned Curved Stairlifts

As Stannah's largest Trade Customer over the last 10 years, Dolphin have also built up a large stock of second hand Stannah 260 stairlifts. Unlike straight stairlifts a new track has to be made for your staircase. Whilst many companies use re-fabricated tracks, we will have a new track designed and manufactured by Stannah to fit your stairs precisely. The cost will vary according to the length of track required, but will start at £2800 including installation and a 12 month guarantee.

Reconditioned Secondhand Stairlifts

Second Hand Stair Lifts

Buying second hand stair lifts is a viable and cost effective alternative to purchasing a brand new stair lift. Most stair lifts can be purchased new or second hand.

Second hand stair lifts should be every bit as reliable as a brand new lift and most reputable firms will offer the same 12 month guarantee.

The life expectancy of a stair lift should be in excess of 10 years, however, anything much older than this and it is probably not worth using anymore. Stair lift suppliers generally stop making spare parts for the lifts after about 10 years.

Straight stair lifts can usually be adapted to fit another staircase because the stair lift rail can be cut to suit the length of the stair. This means that you can use a second hand rail and motor.

Curved staircases will need a new stair lift rail to be manufactured as it essential to have a rail that is made to measure. It is important that the rail is tight to the stairs and does not cause obstruction to others. A second hand motor and chair can still be used.
